Atlas Master HO Scale Slab‑Side Covered Hopper – Detailed, Ready‑to‑Run
This Atlas Master HO Scale Slab‑Side Covered Hopper is a finely crafted replica of a car that served for decades hauling granulated commodities across North American railroads.
Introduced in the late 1940s by the Canadian Pacific Railroad, the original 70‑ton, 3000‑cubic‑foot slab‑side hopper featured smooth welded sides and interior bracing inspired by CP’s offset‑side open hoppers. The design maximized interior width, lowered the center of gravity, and improved tracking stability. Between 1950 and 1964, these cars were produced by National Steel Car, Canadian Car & Foundry, Marine Industries, and Montreal Locomotive Works.
Throughout their production run, variations included multiple roof‑hatch configurations and the adoption of side‑sill openings—an early CP innovation that became standard after 1954 to improve access to discharge mechanisms. These versatile cars remained common on Canadian and U.S. rails into the late 1990s, hauling grain, malt, sugar, cement, and even company sand loads.
Atlas offers this distinctive model in 6‑, 8‑, and 12‑hatch versions, with optional side‑sill openings.
