GE U30B Locomotive (Phase 2 Model)

Developed as General Electric’s response to the popular EMD GP40 and ALCO C430, the U30B was powered by a robust V16 FDL prime mover delivering 3,000 horsepower. GE produced 295 units of this versatile locomotive between 1966 and 1975.

This version depicts a “Phase 2” U30B.

 A key identifying feature of Phase 2 models is the hood beneath the radiator, which is fully flared to match the radiator’s width. U30Bs are distinguished from the similar, lower-horsepower U23Bs by two sets of four tall engine access doors centered along the long hood. Throughout its production, the U30B came equipped with a variety of truck types, including AAR-style trucks, GE’s four-axle FB2 design, and even Blomberg trucks salvaged from EMD trade-ins.

The Norfolk & Western Railway operated the largest fleet of Phase 2 U30Bs, totaling 75 units—all built with high short hoods. Other major owners included the Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O), Frisco, and Western Pacific railroads. Although some of these locomotives continued service under secondary operators, only a handful remain active today.
