The M420 was powered by the ALCO 12V‑251C3 prime mover, delivering 2,000 horsepower. Most units rode on MLW’s distinctive ZWT (Zero Weight‑Transfer) trucks, with one notable exception: the five locomotives built for the Providence & Worcester. Those units used ALCO trade‑in FA trucks, requiring a unique bolster design and altered truck spacing, making them stand out from the rest of the fleet.
Between May 1973 and February 1977, MLW produced 103 M420s for four railways:
-
Canadian National: 80 units
-
BC Rail: 16 units (including eight B‑units)
-
Ferrocarriles del Estado: 2 units
-
Providence & Worcester: 5 units
CN received its locomotives in three groups:
-
MR‑20a (2500–2529): delivered in 1973
-
MR‑20b (2530–2559): delivered in 1974
-
MR‑20c (2560–2579): delivered in 1976
All CN M420s were retired by 1998, with many finding new life on short lines across North America.
