The Kato EMD SD70ACU models are based on locomotives rebuilt from former SD90MAC units. In many respects, the SD70ACU is an evolution of the SD90MAC—an engine that, despite large orders from Union Pacific and Canadian Pacific, never fully integrated into broader North American fleets due to its massive prime mover and limited operational flexibility.

Beginning in 2016, Norfolk Southern initiated a major rebuild program, converting SD90MACs into SD70ACUs by replacing Siemens electronics with Mitsubishi systems and fitting a new SD70ACe‑style cab. Canadian Pacific followed suit, partnering with Progress

Rail to remanufacture its own fleet. CP ultimately received 60 SD70ACUs in 2019.

Kato’s model captures these road‑specific details with precision, including correct headlight placement—nose‑mounted for CP and cab‑mounted for NS. This ready‑to‑run Standard DC locomotive features:
