History of Chosun Diplomacy
During Korea’s last ruling dynasty—the Joseon (Chosun) Dynasty, 1392–1910—the kingdom played a major role in one of the most active diplomatic eras in its history. After the Imjin War with Japan (1592–1598), Japan repeatedly sought to re‑establish diplomatic relations with Chosun.
Between 1607 and 1811, Chosun sent twelve official diplomatic missions to Japan. These ships were essential to those long and symbolically important journeys. Each vessel was designed to make a strong visual impression on everyone who saw it.
A typical mission included six ships, all decorated with elaborate flags and painted hulls featuring Dancheong, the traditional Korean style of colorful, ornate patterns. Together, these elements showcased the dignity, authority, and cultural pride of the Chosun kingdom.
