About the EMD / GMDD SW9
The SW9 continued Electro‑Motive Division’s tradition of compact, powerful switchers built for yard and local service. Produced between 1950 and 1953, nearly 800 units were constructed at EMD’s La Grange facility. GMDD in London, Ontario, added another 29 units for Canadian National and Canadian Pacific.
Powered by the dependable 567B prime mover—with a select few upgraded to the 567BC, later used in the SW1200—the SW9 became one of the most widely adopted switchers of its era. A total of 69 railroads rostered the SW9, from industrial operators to major Class I carriers. The Illinois Central placed the largest single order with 70 units.
Rapido’s model captures the rugged character and road‑specific nuances of this iconic locomotive with exceptional detail and weight.
